Kitten Vet FAQ — Alhambra

When should I bring my kitten in for their first vet visit?

As soon as possible — ideally within a few days of bringing them home. The first visit establishes a baseline, checks for parasites and congenital issues, and gets the vaccine series started. The earlier the first visit, the better.

How many vaccines does a kitten need in the first year?

Kittens need a series of FVRCP vaccines (at 8, 12, and 16 weeks), rabies at 12–16 weeks, and possibly FeLV depending on lifestyle. We create an individualized plan at your first visit.

When should I spay or neuter my kitten?

For most cats, 5–6 months is appropriate. We discuss timing at your kitten visits. Early spay/neuter (before the first heat for females) reduces the risk of mammary tumors significantly.

My kitten is sneezing — is that normal?

Some sneezing is normal, especially shortly after adoption from a shelter. But persistent sneezing, nasal discharge, or eye discharge can indicate an upper respiratory infection that needs treatment. Call us if symptoms persist more than 2–3 days.

Should I get pet insurance for my kitten?

We recommend looking into it while your kitten is young and healthy, before any conditions develop that could be excluded as pre-existing. We can't recommend specific plans, but insuring early usually means better coverage.

Your Local Kitten Veterinarian in Alhambra

If you are searching for a kitten vet in Alhambra or the San Gabriel Valley, South Pasadena Animal Hospital is here to help. Located at 3116 West Main Street in Alhambra, our clinic regularly sees kittens for first exams, vaccine series, and preventive care through the entire first year of life. We understand that bringing home a new kitten is exciting — and that the first vet visit sets the tone for your cat's relationship with veterinary care for the rest of their life.

The kitten vaccine series is one of the most important investments you can make in your cat's health. FVRCP vaccines protect against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia — diseases that can be severe or fatal in unvaccinated kittens. Rabies vaccination is required by law in California. For kittens with outdoor access or exposure to unknown cats, FeLV (feline leukemia virus) vaccination is also strongly recommended. We create a customized vaccine schedule at your kitten's first visit based on their age, lifestyle, and health status.

FIV and FeLV testing is something we recommend for all new kittens. Both viruses are transmitted between cats and can have significant implications for your kitten's long-term health and for any other cats already in your household. Testing early means you have complete information from the start. We run this test in-house, so results are available the same day.

Kitten owners come to SPAH from across the region, including Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Gabriel, Monterey Park, Temple City, and Rosemead. If you have a new kitten and are looking for a vet, contact us to get started.
