Finding a vet who genuinely knows birds takes you outside the neighborhood. South Pasadena Animal Hospital is about 10 minutes from Pasadena via CA-110 South to the Main St exit. We're at 3116 W Main St in Alhambra, with free parking right out front.
We're currently accepting new avian patients. Most general vet practices in the area focus exclusively on dogs and cats. Avian patients have very different anatomy, metabolism, and disease patterns — and benefit from a team that sees them regularly. That's what we offer.
Whether your bird needs a routine wellness exam, a beak or nail trim, or you're worried about a change in behavior, we'll give them a thorough look. Our full avian care page covers everything we do for birds at SPAH.
We see these species regularly and are comfortable with their individual health patterns and handling needs:
One of the most common avian patients we see. Wellness exams, respiratory issues, feather condition, nutritional counseling, beak and nail trims.
Respiratory infections, mite infestations, tumor screening (budgies are prone to tumors), and annual wellness exams.
Green cheek, sun, and nanday conures. Wellness exams, feather plucking evaluation, crop issues, egg-binding evaluation.
Annual checkups, nutritional guidance, respiratory health, and grooming services.
Air sac mite treatment, respiratory support, wellness monitoring, and leg band issues.
Canker treatment, respiratory disease, parasite screening, and wellness exams.
If you have a larger parrot (macaw, African grey, Amazon), call us at (626) 441-1314 to discuss your specific bird before booking. See our exotic animal care page for more on what we see.
Birds are prey animals and instinctively mask signs of illness. By the time symptoms are obvious, they've often been sick for days or longer. The health concerns we see most often in our avian patients include:
A first visit at SPAH for a new avian patient typically covers:
We assess feather condition, eyes, nares, beak, keel (breastbone), abdomen, vent, and feet. We listen to the respiratory tract and evaluate muscle condition.
Birds are weighed in grams at every visit. Even small weight changes can signal illness before visible symptoms appear. We track this over time.
We review your bird's cage setup, diet (pellets vs. seeds vs. fresh foods), UV lighting, social enrichment, and sleep schedule. Environment is a major driver of avian health and behavior.
If needed, we can run in-house fecal gram stains, bloodwork, and X-rays. Rapid diagnostics matter for birds, which can deteriorate quickly. We discuss recommendations based on your bird's history and exam findings. Visit our exotic exams page for more detail, or view all services.

Yes. Birds mask illness instinctively — by the time they look obviously sick, they've usually been compensating for days or weeks. A subtle behavior change or unexplained weight loss is reason enough to call.

Pasadena bird owners: we're about 10 minutes away and currently accepting new avian patients. Schedule online or call — our team will find a time that works.
Bird owners in Pasadena often find it difficult to locate a vet who regularly sees avian patients. Most clinics in the Pasadena area focus on dogs and cats, leaving cockatiel, parakeet, conure, and lovebird owners with limited nearby options. South Pasadena Animal Hospital in Alhambra is a short drive via the 110 freeway and provides comprehensive avian veterinary care as part of our exotic animal practice.
Avian medicine requires an understanding of how birds differ fundamentally from mammals — from their unique respiratory systems and air sacs to their rapid metabolisms and instinct to mask illness. Our team performs thorough physical exams, reviews diet and husbandry, and recommends diagnostics based on findings — without unnecessary upselling. We use a gram scale at every visit because even a 5–10% drop in body weight can be clinically significant in a small bird.
In-house diagnostics include fecal gram stains, avian bloodwork, crop washes, and digital radiographs. We also offer grooming services — beak trims, nail trims, and wing clips — which can be combined with a wellness exam or scheduled as standalone appointments.
Pasadena bird owners are welcome at SPAH. We also serve bird owners from across the Pasadena area, Pasadena exotic pet owners, San Marino, Arcadia, Temple City, and throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Contact us to schedule your bird's appointment.
